What is Solana and how to use it?

Written by Ciaran

Solana is a fast, low-cost blockchain network designed for decentralized applications (DApps), digital assets, and payments. It is known for its high transaction speeds, low fees, and ability to support a wide range of crypto applications, including decentralized finance (DeFi), NFTs, and blockchain games.

The Solana network supports its native cryptocurrency, SOL, along with thousands of tokens built using the Solana Program Library (SPL) token standard.

The Bitcoin.com Wallet supports Solana, allowing users to securely send, receive, store, and use assets on the Solana network directly from the multichain wallet.

Why use Solana?

Users choose Solana because it offers:

  • Fast transaction confirmations

  • Very low transaction fees

  • Support for a wide range of DApps and digital assets

  • A growing ecosystem of DeFi platforms, NFT marketplaces, and blockchain games

  • High network performance and scalability

What assets can I use on Solana?

Solana uses SOL as its native cryptocurrency for paying network fees and interacting with the blockchain. In addition to SOL, the network supports many SPL tokens, including stablecoins such as USDC and other compatible digital assets.

Important: Assets on Solana are separate from the same assets on other blockchain networks. For example, USDC on Solana is different from USDC on Ethereum, Base, or Tron.

Always ensure you select the correct network when sending or receiving crypto. Sending funds on the wrong network may result in permanent loss of funds.

Using Solana in the Bitcoin.com Wallet

With the Bitcoin.com Wallet, you can:

  • Create a Solana wallet

  • Send and receive SOL and SPL tokens

  • Connect to Solana DApps using WalletConnect (where supported)

  • Swap supported assets

  • Manage your multichain portfolio in one app

The Bitcoin.com Wallet is self-custodial, meaning only you control your funds and recovery phrase.

What is SOL used for?

SOL is the native cryptocurrency of the Solana network. You need a small amount of SOL in your wallet to pay network fees when:

  • Sending assets

  • Swapping supported tokens

  • Connecting to DApps

  • Interacting with smart contracts

Even when sending SPL tokens such as USDC, network fees are paid in SOL.

Is Solana the same as Ethereum?

No. Solana is a separate blockchain network with its own architecture, native cryptocurrency (SOL), and token standard (SPL).

While Solana and Ethereum both support smart contracts and decentralized applications, they are not compatible by default. Assets on one network cannot be used on the other unless transferred using a supported bridge or exchange.

This means:

  • Solana addresses are different from Ethereum addresses.

  • Solana uses SPL tokens instead of Ethereum's ERC-20 token standard.

  • Transactions occur on the Solana network, not Ethereum.

  • Assets must remain on the same network unless bridged or transferred through a supported service.
